Research commissioned by the Gas Industry Safety Group (GISG) and the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (IGEM) into training provided to gas engineer students in the UK. In the light of a significant increase in unsafe gas work from recently qualified engineers, with volumes of unsafe work up from 1% to 5% (Gas Safe Register), there has been an increased focus on engineer training and assessment amid growing concerns that the training focuses on passing the assessments rather than job competency. In order to understand better the current experience of training and assessment, GISG and IGEM commissioned a qualitative research study. Telephone depth interviews were carried out with twenty-three newly qualified gas engineers, the definition of ‘newly qualified’ being within the last 18 months.
